Them... Again

Where do you go to find a horde of gold-hungry leprechauns?

Easy answer. Absolutely anywhere.

We were ejected from the Path at the end of the pier mainly because it was the only place I could think of where if they tried to wreak havoc there wasn't much of anything to wreak it on. Plus, it was simply the place I thought of. Aunty snatched her hand from mine and scowled at me. "That wasn't fair." She checked where we were then raised an inquisitive eyebrow.

"Yeah, I know. Best place to deal with them I figured. They can't do much damage, the golem can't swim, at least I don't think clay men can swim, and there's only one way in or out of here. Plus, we haven't been for a while and I like it."

"I guess," she said dubiously. "Let's get this over with then. And Spencer?"

"Yeah?"

"I'm so sorry. I loved her too, you know. She was my friend, all of ours. It hurts, and I can't quite believe it, but don't blame yourself. She has always had problems, you know that. Some Odd Ones accept it, embrace it, others fight it the whole time and never come to grips with it."

"She had me. But she was also always a loner. She did get depressed a lot, found it hard to live in the world, but I never thought she'd do anything like this. My friend, that's what she was. Like a sister. I always wanted a sister."

"You've still got Aunty. You'll always have Aunty." She gave me a quick hug and a peck on the cheek then took my hands and moved back to study me. "You're a good man, Freaky Spencer, at least some times, so don't let this take that away from you. You are not to blame. You hear me? She did what she did because she saw the world the wrong way, wouldn't let people in, not even you. She could have talked to you, but she decided to do this. It's her fault, not yours. No, that came out wrong. Not even her fault. Her mind, it wasn't right, she couldn't help it either. It's this damn world, this damn curse we all have to bear. It's done, now we move on. Come on, let's call those horrid green men and see if they can help."

"Oh, they'll help all right," I said with a sigh. "They want the gold. They'll do what we ask for a prize like this. And Aunty? Thank you. This hurts the worst. I thought Black was a true friend, but I guess you're right. She couldn't cope with this life, with what she was, what we all are. Maybe this is for the best. At least she's at rest now."

We moved away from each other a little then I looked up into the gathering clouds. Wind whipped at my hair, the salty tang of the ocean on my tongue, and I called, "I have a chest of gold from the end of the rainbow for the leprechauns.
